Purpose of the Common Syllabus

The intention of the common syllabus project and the related syllabus tool is to ensure consistency of course focus and scope worldwide and provide model materials for faculty who teach the course, particularly those teaching it for the first time. The common syllabus was developed in response to a number of factors – including not only accreditation review and overseas contracts, but also UMUC’s commitment to academic quality and continuity for all its students.

The common syllabus helps UMUC ensure that:

  • A student who starts a course sequence in one format or geographical location will have the foundation to continue in another and some familiarity with our approach;
  • All faculty understand the place of the course in our curriculum and its desired learning outcomes; and
  • the individual faculty member’s teaching is supported and enriched by the thinking of others in the discipline.

Over 300 common syllabi have already been developed.  Over time, we expect to have a common syllabus for every course.  New course proposals are required to be submitted with the proposed syllabus.

Directions

Below you will find instructions for Division (Director) and Faculty Level. Please keep in mind that the syllabus section within WebTycho will be populated with the use of the syllabus tool.  The structure of the syllabus located in the syllabus tool is similar to that in WebTycho and will integrate with the WebTycho course.
